Chef and restauranteur Marco Pierre White was born in December 1961 to parents Frank (a chef at the Griffin Hotel on Boar Lane) and Maria-Rosa (who was working at the Griffin Hotel while learning English).
His parents settled in North Leeds and Marco attended Allerton High School without any great success - he left without any qualifications. Pretty quickly Marco decided he knew where he wanted to be in life and started his training as a chef in Harrogate, before moving to the Box Tree restaurant in Ilkley - an establishment that had a tremendous effect on him, signified by references to the Ilkley eatery on his menus.
Still a teenager, White left for London and became a commis chef at Le Gavroche - the reputable restaurant run by the Roux brothers, Albert and Michel, before training with other well-known figures in the industry like Nico Ladenis and Raymond Blanc.
After "serving his apprenticeship" with the best chefs in the country, White opened his first restaurant
