In my discipline, Sociology, analyzing autobiographies, or life histories, has a rich foundation. Such narrative analysis enables us to gain insight into the phenomenological life worlds of both self and others. The quintessential example of a classic sociological study employing the use of autobiographical data is The Polish Peasant in Europe and America by W.I.
Thomas and Florian Znaniecki (1918). Their analysis of familial letters exchanged between new immigrants to the U.S. and their family members in Poland shed light on the effects of immigration, industrialization, disintegration, and reorganization.
Of course Sociology does not solely lay claim to utilizing the method of autobiographical analysis. Many disciplines – and not just in the social sciences – recognize the value of autobiographies in understanding subjective experiences in a holistic and reflective manner.
